dietrich in rio
(2004 Madacy Entertainment Group, Canadá) e Lili Marlene (2005 ELAP).
It is not every day that a legend comes to town, but it is a rare legend that receives as vociferous a welcome as Marlene Dietrich did when she appered in Rio de Janeiro. The incomparable Marlene was virtually mobbed at the airport - extra police had to be summoned, and she grew faint from the jam - and the happy Cariocas, who know a goddess when they see one, crowded around her at every opportunity thereafter. Her appearences, in Rio, Buenos Aires and São Paulo, touched off minor riots and received an unprecedented display in not only the local press, but that of the world. The publicity, coupled with glowing reviews, immediatly prompted offers from impresarios everywhere. Paris, as it usually does, won out Miss Dietrich repeated her South American triumphs at the Théâtre de L'Étoile in the City of Light soon after.
In Rio, the "Anjo Azul" (Blue Angel, from her first important film) appeared at the Golden Room of the Copacabana Palace, and not only bruk but shattered every record in the place. Her performance, preserved here in this on-the-spot recording, was as incendiary as ever, and perhaps more so, inflamed by the enthusiasm of her audiences. Miss Sietrich, as becomes a genuine artist, prepared her program with considerable care, and the enchanting result is here for everyone to enjoy.
She was first seen in a strinking gown and presented the first half of her program in that attire. Then she changed into a man's costume-white tie and tails, and peculiarly becoming-for the second half of her program, singing songs not ordinarily associated with women and presenting a fascinating duality of concept. There is, as Ira Gershwin haspointed out, difficulty in adapting certain songs to the needs of the singer, and Miss Dietrich solved the problem by changing her personality, rather than the songs. It is an altogether remarkable performance, one that somehow maintains and reinforces, rather than diminishes, her enduring allure.
In her films, in her war work, in her night-club appearences, on records, and even walking down the street, Marlene Dietrich is sui generis. There is no one else like her in the world, andit is a fortunate world to contain her bewitching presence.
